Puget Sound Naval Shipyard Below the Rainbow - Bremerton, WA 98312

One rainy afternoon, I caught a glimpse of a gorgeous rainbow overlooking Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, WA.  This is proof that beauty exists beyond the rain storm.

The Cheesecake Factory: A True Classic – Tukwila, WA 98188

Cheesecake Design
Classic Margarita
BBQ Chicken Pizza
Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Cheesecake

The Cheescake Factory is a true American classic restaurant.  With over thirty different types of cheesecake, the Cheesecake Factory is one of my favorites.  Every restaurant is packed with elegant architecture and fabulous design.  However, my favorite version of the Cheesecake Factory is in Chicago, Illinois below the Hancock building.  The entire inside is shaped and rounded in order to emulate the inside of a cheesecake.  As always, we enjoyed fabulous service, food, and drinks at the Tukwila, Washington location.  The only downside to this particular Cheesecake Factory is the lack of booth seating.  It seems they only seat booths at night.  If you are arriving during happy hour, prepare to eat elbow to elbow with your neighbors.  We beat the crowd by grabbing seats at the bar.  It is also important to note the fabulous birthday cheesecake that is complimentary on your birthday.  It comes complete with a candle and singing on request.  The menu is also quite large and can feel a bit overwhelming on your first visit.  I recommend asking the waiter or waitress for their favorites upon being seated.  As always, the Cheesecake Factory never disappoints.  This is a terrific choice of restaurant for any occasion.

Critic's Tip:  Cheesecakes can be refrigerated up to five days or frozen up to six months.  Order your fresh cheesecake through the Cheesecake Factory and have it delivered to your house.  Click here for details.

Amy's On the Bay: Elegant Dining & Delicious Seafood - Port Orchard, WA 98366

Lemon Drop Cocktail

Grandpa Casey's Seafood Feast
The view from our table.
The windows lift up in the summer to let in the breeze.

The other night my husband and I were in the mood for trying a new restaurant.  I had previously noticed television commercials for Amy’s On the Bay, and after viewing their menu online, we decided to check it out.  As we wound our way through the streets of downtown Port Orchard, we realized that we had passed this restaurant many times without noticing.  The restaurant is tucked away behind other buildings along the main street in order to provide a beautiful view along the Puget Sound.  After turning into the parking lot, I could definitely agree that Amy’s has the best view of the bay from downtown Port Orchard.

Upon entering, we immediately took in the wonderful scent of fresh food being cooked in the kitchen as the hostess politely asked, “Would you like a table with a view tonight?”  Absolutely!  After being seated, I immediately noticed a delightful drink menu and decided upon the Lemon Drop cocktail.  A few moments later, I was sipping on my drink and taking in the beautiful bay views.  Amy’s view is quite breathtaking.  Our salads arrived soon thereafter, and I was quite pleased with the presentation.  Even the carrots were expertly sliced in curly waves floating atop the salad greens.

After studying the menu, I noticed a grand array of different types of fish entrees, which piqued my interest.  My husband ordered Grandpa Casey’s Seafood Feast, and I decided upon the two-piece Alaskan Cod Seafood Basket.  The fish arrived in a mouthwatering display of fresh and hot seafood.  Our favorite!  The server politely explained each of the types of fish, and then left us alone to eat to our heart’s content.  The fish was fabulous.  We are happy to announce we have found our new favorite seafood restaurant on the west side of Puget Sound, Amy’s On the Bay.  According to my husband, the jumbo prawns were some of the best he has ever had.  I was also impressed by the selection of sauce samplers that were brought complimentary to our table during our meal.

Overall, the restaurant was extremely clean with fresh modern décor, and the staff was polite and friendly.   I left Amy’s with a grin on my face, a full tummy, and a thankful heart that we finally found the seafood restaurant we had been missing.

Critic’s Note: Look out for summer.  Amy’s has outdoor seating.  Get there early once the weather warms up because the great seats won’t last for long!

Café Spiaggia: Classic Sophistication Meets Grand Italian Cuisine – Chicago, IL 60611

A trip to Chicago must always include a meal at a fabulous downtown Chicago restaurant.  After all, if you have ever walked Michigan Avenue, it not only screams wealth with its architecture, but also true sophistication.  See below for a recent pal’s review of
Café Spiaggia.

Upon entering, the service was warm and friendly; even for us out of town sort of people.  The dress code was casual.  The hostess seated us by a large glass window with a nice view of Michigan Avenue and Lake Michigan in the background.  Since it was only 11:30 central time on a Monday, we were some of the first guests to arrive for the day.  After being seated, couples trickled in, but the restaurant remained relatively uncrowded for a Monday.

First serving was warm bread and flat cheese bread with our choice of drinks.  Complimentary oil was offered on the table for dipping.  I had a salad first, which was quite amazing.  The Italiana came with curly endive, Treviso, frisée, red onions, and ricotta salata for nine dollars.  Next, I ordered the Ravioli, which was good, but a bit too pork tasting for me.  The Paste – Ravioli came with pork, ricotta, abalone mushroom, Granny Smith
apples, rosemary, and apple balsamico for eighteen dollars.  The coffee was absolutely amazing and my favorite part of the meal.

Overall, would I eat here again?  In a heartbeat!  It was great.  We were treated very nicely.

Laurie Hamm: Prompt, Professional, & Courteous Realtor - Port Orchard, WA 98366

                                                      ("Laurie Hamm", 2012)

In light of the bottomless interest rates on mortgages, we recently decided to look into real estate.  As we have all heard in the news, “it’s a buyer’s market”, and it certainly is from our recent observations.  After scoping through several listings online, we sent emails to various offices and found a realtor that was not only available, but prompt as well.  Laurie Hamm of Reid Real Estate met us on a gorgeous Saturday afternoon.  We had originally called another office to look at houses, but found many realtors in the area do not work on Saturdays or by “appointment only”.  This was a bit disappointing due to the fact that we work during the week and often do not make plans ahead of time due to constant schedule changes for my husband’s work.  So we were more than happy to find a realtor that would meet with us on a Saturday with minimal notice and show us the ropes in the market.  Laurie not only came prepared with listing details and paperwork, but she was also on time.  I appreciated her follow up emails and prompt communication on the details of properties in the area.  She was also very knowledgeable about VA financing and qualifications for military families, which I found to be very helpful.  Together we combed houses and examined the pros and cons of every property that would meet our needs.  Thank you Laurie for your time and patience in our property search.  We appreciate your kindness and most especially the handwritten note in the mail.  I would highly recommend Laurie for your next real estate search in Port Orchard, WA and the surrounding areas.

The Olympic Mountain Range - Washington

Every now and again Washington state has beautiful clear skies in the month of March, and this day was no exception.  As we passed over a hill on our usual route to the store, we caught a glimpse of the breathtaking Olympic Mountain Range.  Several other cars were also pulling over as I jumped out of my car and snapped this picture.  Far away, the mountains seem more like a blue and white snowy dream, but on a brisk spring day in Washington, it's worth waiting through the rainy season for this gorgeous view.  More beautiful pictures coming soon.

Hale’s Alehouse Restaurant & Pub – Silverdale, WA 98383

The bar

Finally, I have found a great restaurant that is clean, serves great beer, and includes homemade meatloaf on their menu.  All items served by Hale's Alehouse are made from scratch.  Deep fryers are not allowed in here!  My meatloaf was outstanding and very flavorful.  The waitress was attentive and friendly.  After I explained that I prefer wheat ales, she brought me a sample of their “El Jefe” Weizen Ale.  It is a smooth wheat ale with a touch of orange.  The "El Jefe" is similar to Blue Moon, but much better.  Overall, Hale’s was a terrific experience, and we are definitely coming back to try more flavors from their brewery.  This restaurant may be connected to the Kitsap Mall, but it is definitely not your typical mall restaurant.  Thank you Hale’s Alehouse for the tasty beer and scrumptious food.  See you next time!

Carrie Bradshaw's Apartment for Sale! - NYC 10014

O'Nieals (a.k.a. Scout bar from show)
O'Nieals

Pleasure Chest (where Charlotte bought her Rabbit)
Yes, it is up for grabs again: Carrie’s apartment a.k.a. the brownstone from the popular HBO series, Sex and the City.  At only 9.65 million, this beauty is sure to make a quick sale.  It has ten rooms, six fireplaces, and the front door was home to Carrie’s first smooches on the show.  According to area news, this apartment has been a real nuisance in the past due to tour buses constantly stopping in front of the building.  Therefore in 2008, area neighbors finally stopped this from happening (Dumas, 2012).  This is where I come in.  It just so happens I have been on this exact tour! Yep!  Thanks to my hubby who took me to NYC for my birthday last year.  He surprised me with a fabulous Sex and the City tour through On Location tours.  I do remember passing Carrie’s apartment, but we were unable to stop for photos.  However, we did have a fabulous time.  Read below about my Sex and the City tour in NYC.

A glimpse into last year’s tour…

I had the pleasure of attending
the Sex and the City screen tour through downtown New York City this past week and had so much fun that I had to share the idea on this blog.  Our tour guide, Ms. Amy Albert was not only fun, but quite humorous as well.  All company tour guides are active professional actresses and comedians who know the business, and Ms. Albert is no exception.  Currently, she can be seen performing her own show, Delilah Dix and her Bag of Tricks.  Her funky style and animated humor kept the entire tour laughing and in pure enjoyment the entire way.  Even my husband enjoyed himself despite never having seen the show.

Which tour should you choose?  This depends on the type of package and interests of your party.  Since my husband knew I was addicted to the Sex and the City show when it used to air on HBO, he opted for the Sex and the City screen tour.  The tour consisted of three to four stops throughout New York City at famous scenes featured on the show, show trivia with Ms. Albert’s spicy humor, and of course a free cupcake at the famed “Scout” bar featured on the show.  Plus, we experienced a private tour through Manhattan in sections that are not typical of the usual New York City bus tours such as the beautiful West Village.

One particular girls night out package that sounds really fun is ‘The Samantha” private tour from the Sex and the City packages.  According to the On Location Tours brochure, it includes a limousine tour of the Sex and the City hotspots, dinner at a famous location featured on the show, free admission into a famous lounge featured on the show with a free round of drinks, and gifts relevant to the show for the party.  There are also other fun Sex and the City packages, which are customized according to the character of your choice from the show.

Now you may ask, what about my boyfriend or fiancé? No worries!  The company features guys night out packages as well.  One featured guys night out package includes a private limousine tour of the famous Sopranos hotspots.  The tour also includes the ability to visit the Sopranos famed diners, gentleman’s clubs, and the Bada Bing club.

So next time you are wondering what to do on a Friday night or you are stuck planning your best friend’s bachelorette party, contact On Location Tours.  Their tour guides will make sure you have a fabulous night filled with spectacular Hollywood fun.  Your friends will thank you for it.

The Crystal Cathedral: A New Era Begins – Garden Grove, CA 92840

The Crystal Cathedral

The Crystal Cathedral has been acquired by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange County.  In case you are unfamiliar, the Crystal Cathedral was constructed for Dr. Robert H. Schuller’s congregation in 1980 and is home to the popular “Hour of Power” television show.    In the past few years, the cathedral has experienced financial ups and downs, and finally it has been officially acquired as of February 2012.  I am saddened to hear of the final sale of this beautiful church.  This past fall I had a chance to visit Orange County, and the Crystal Cathedral’s magnificent structure.  It is truly a remarkable place that I will never forget.  The Crystal Cathedral stands at 128 feet in height and 207 feet in width with more than 10,000 windows.  According to history in 1955, once Dr. Schuller’s original congregation grew to more than 10,000 members, he decided that he wanted a similar drive-in type church feeling for his congregation, and thus, he built the church that would contain thousands of glass windows that would let in the beautiful Sunday morning sun and blue skies.  The church seats more than 2,736 people and contains the third largest church pipe organ in the world.  This church was also home to the first church structure that was truly designed for televised Christian worship; the “Hour of Power”.  Visit this magnificent church while you can because after the current congregation’s three year lease is over, it may be too late.

Critic’s Note:  My favorite book by
Dr. Schuller, “If You Can Dream It You Can Do It”.  The prayers in this book are life changing.

El Pueblito: Great Food, Terrible Service – Port Orchard, WA 98366

Tonight, we tried a new restaurant, El Pueblito in Port Orchard, WA.  At first I was a bit hesitant to try a new place because I had my fancy desire to eat at our usual Mexican restaurant, but our usual spot was booked solid.  Upon entering we were greeted warmly by the host and seated immediately in a great spot with a booth.  The entire restaurant was extremely clean, appropriate lighting, and bright warm coloring.  I was even enjoying the menu, which described the family’s first restaurant in Mexico in 1985.  The restaurant was family owned and authentic, which piqued my interest.  Authentic Mexican food is always the best.  We waited for a bit for our chips and salsa, but he also brought waters, which was a plus.  Then we ordered.  The menu was very grand, and looked delicious.  It came complete with large colorful pictures of several menu items, which is always a plus.  My husband ordered the Carne Asada Macho Burrito (Large Steak Burrito), and I ordered the Enchiladas Rojas with chicken.  Then we dug in to our chips and salsa.  The salsa was awesome!  It’s the best salsa we’ve had in all of our tastings.  In fact after one helping, I was gulping down my margarita and my husband was finished with his Corona.  Then we asked for a slightly warmer salsa because we had heard that they had several choices.  At this point, we were munching away happily on our chips and salsa (second helping).  Believe me, it is unusual for us to order a second helping, but it was too good.  Then we noticed something.  The couple behind us had walked in twenty minutes after us, and they were being served their food already.  We sat there dumbfounded.  Then I kept my eye on the kitchen and watched my waiter walk to and fro amongst the other guests.  The entire restaurant is divided in such a way that forgetting our table would probably be an issue, but who was I to tell the restaurant how to assemble?  It’s not.  I’m the guest.  By now it’s close to thirty-five minutes later and we still have not been served.  With five minutes to spare until we would have walked out, we were finally served; one large chicken burrito and beef enchiladas.  Go figure.  They mixed up our order all wrong.   At this point, I was disappointed because as many of my readers know, I dislike giving a negative review.  However, I continued to eat because it was not worth sending the food back.  We had waited too long, and we were both starving.  Then the waiter forgot to bring our sour cream on the side; twice.  What seemed like an entire great buttering up during appetizers came down to a huge disappointment for dinner.  Overall, I give their food an A+, but their service an F.  Better luck next time, I suppose (if there will be a next time).  Probably not.

Jack's Liquidation: Cheerful Service & Splendid Deals - Port Orchard, WA 98367

Today, I had the pleasure of discovering Jack’s Liquidation consignment shop.  It was filled with all sorts of treasures.   After walking around the huge warehouse filled with merchandise, we finally discovered a huge collection of baseball cards and other collectibles.  My husband has been collecting and trading baseball cards for almost six years and was very excited to find a large collection.  As we have discovered in the past, most estate sales and consignment shops are rigid with their pricing, but Jack was happy to bargain with the shoppers.  In fact, I noticed he was making deals with everyone who came into the shop.   Next time you are in the Port Orchard area seeking great sales and consignment shops, make a trip to 5712 S. Bethel Road and meet with Jack.  New merchandise is available weekly, and Jack will be happy to work you a great deal too.

Critic’s Note: Jack’s Liquidation is located at 5712 S. Bethel Road in Port Orchard, WA 98367.  (360) 271-9788.

Washington Nationals Game Day - Washington D.C. 20003

Lifehouse
Lifehouse at National Park
With each passing day cold and gray, I reflect on happier times this past summer.   One great memory was my visit to the Washington Nationals baseball game at the National Park in downtown D.C.  Compared to my last game at Wrigley Field, this was much more fun!  Wrigley really needs to upgrade to a giant screen.  It is SO much better; especially considering I do not always follow the game.  Instead, I am there for the fun, food, and atmosphere.  The best part was the Washington Nationals Presidents Race.  During the fourth inning, giant caricature foam heads depicting our former Presidents (found on Mount Rushmore) race around the edge of the field.  Everyone cheered for Teddy, and according to Wikipedia, Teddy has yet to win a single race.  However, the entire crowd kept cheering and hoping anyway.  It was a real hit for the crowd.  See the 2011 Season Presidents Race standings here.  I also was able to experience my first crowd “wave”.  It went round and round the stadium three or four times before the fun ended, and the game started up once again.

Once the game was over, we had a free concert featuring the band,
Lifehouse.  This was my initial draw to the game, but I was a bit disappointed.  There is a reason bands do not perform in baseball stadiums.  The acoustics are terrible!  However, it was still fun to see the band up close and personal.

Critic’s Note: For great seats next to the field, check out Stubhub.com.  They are the best!

The Seattle RV Show - 98134

The Showroom

TurfBug.com (Golf & Travel Show)
Free stuff!

Attention all camping and RV enthusiasts!  The Seattle RV show is now on for your camping amusement.  Whether you are shopping for a new RV or just looking around, Seattle’s RV show has an RV for you.  The show offers hundreds of RV options, and all RV’s are ready for a walk through inspection.  So today, we were up close and personal with some of the nation’s leading RVs in the country.  I am normally a huge fan of travel trailers, but the show also featured several toy haulers that piqued my interest.  The show bus lines were a bit disappointing.  Most ranged in price between $120,000 to $300,000, and the fifth wheels priced at only $65,000 were just as nice!  Many of the layouts were similar, but a few of my favorites were the Attitude, Grey Wolf (by Forest River), Raptor (by Keystone), and Dutchmen.  The RV show also featured hundreds of vendors lined up and ready to discuss plans on enhancing your RV and camping experience.

The best part was the Golf and Travel show next to the RV exhibit.  The travel show presented many options for great deals on resorts, golf courses, and travel destinations.  It is a perfect way to get to know your state and all it has to offer.  Travel destinations included Alaska, Sandals Resorts, Jamaica, Breezes Resorts, China, Spain, Hawaii, and Mexico.  Plus, the giveaways and prizes made the event interactive and much more fun.  I am still crossing my fingers hoping I will win one of those free trips.  Did I mention I received a free three night and four-day camping excursion in Washington State?  This alone was worth the trip and tickets.

Critic’s Tip: Buy your tickets online, and you will receive free parking in the Safeco Parking Garage.  It’s an $11 value!

EMP: Pop Culture Bliss - Seattle, WA 98109

Guitar Sculpture

Avatar Shoes

Avatar Exhibit

Have you ever wanted to experience the world’s largest indoor LED screen?  Look no further than the EMP (Experience Music Project) Museum in downtown Seattle.  The screen is HUGE and so clear.  It is as if you are viewing the live music concert inside a real venue.  The EMP Museum features all sorts of pop culture phenomenon.  One of their latest exhibitions is the Avatar movie exhibit.  This includes partial sets from the movie and props used during filming.  This exhibit is also very kid friendly.  It includes a green screen room in which your child can become a real avatar on screen and film a short segment.  The EMP museum also features sections on other pop culture and music icons including Nirvana and the legendary guitarist, Jimi Hendrix.  Overall, I found the museum to be well worth the price and a trip downtown.

Critic’s Tip:  EMP offers coat services, but beware.  Your coat is stuffed inside a square box visible to everyone and not folded neatly.  I would highly recommend holding on to your coat instead of checking it.

Puerto Vallarta: A better Mexican dining experience - Port Orchard, WA 98366

Looking for a delicious Mexican dining experience on the west side of Puget Sound?  Puerto Vallarta is an excellent choice for dinner, drinks, and fun.  This is not your typical Mexican restaurant.  Yes, they serve most typical Mexican dishes, but all entrees are made from scratch full of authentic Mexican flavors.  We were served chilled glasses with our beers followed by delicious hot plates of food.  The best part was marveling at all of the beautiful décor.  Every wall is hand painted and depicts beautiful Mexican culture.  Plus, the restaurant was extremely clean, and the waiter was very attentive.  A box was brought to our table following our meal before I had time to request one.  Overall, it may be a few more dollars per entree for the meal compared to other Mexican restaurants, but the service, delicious food, and overall atmosphere is worth every penny.  Thanks Puerto Vallarta for my delicious enchiladas and ice cold Blue Moon.

Critic’s Tip: Celebrating a birthday?  Puerto Vallarta performs an enthusiastic birthday celebration package that comes complete with a beautiful velveteen sombrero.

The Seattle Ferry

What can I say about the Seattle Ferry?  Well, it was fun, but a long ride at 45 minutes from the west side of the pond in Bremerton, WA.  It is free to ride from the west to the east side, but costs around $7.50 per passenger to come back.  Unlike the Staten Island Ferry in New York, the Seattle Ferry allows vehicles to board.  Plus, with a Wave2Go pass, the ferry is the cheapest transportation when traveling to Seattle on a daily basis because parking fees near the ferry are expensive.  The ferry comes complete with large comfortable seating and tables with cup holders.  The best part was watching the upper deck passengers feeding the birds as they followed us out into Puget Sound.  However, I am not sure whether or not Washington state frowns upon this behavior.

Critic’s Note:  On a clear day, the Seattle Ferry from Bremerton provides a terrific view of Mount Rainier.  Keep a close watch because you could miss it amongst the clouds.

Shari's Restaurant: Great food and delicious pies - Bremerton, WA 98310

All American Panini

Peanut Butter Chocolate Silk Pie

Lunch Trio

After weeks of driving by the Shari’s Restaurant sign, we finally decided to stop and try their food.  Shari’s reminded me a lot of the Full Moon diner in northern Chicago.  Its laid back atmosphere combined with their fresh food brought back great memories of an old fashioned diner that serves fresh homemade pies and desserts.  Shari’s did not disappoint my memories.  I had the lunch trio with a fresh roasted turkey sandwich, soup, and a slice of Peanut Butter Chocolate Silk pie.  My hubby tried the All American Panini sandwich with fries.  All of Shari’s ingredients were fresh and tasted divine.  Plus, the pie was sliced fresh on order and absolutely delicious!  Give Shari’s a try in the Pacific Northwest.  It is the perfect restaurant when you are craving great taste without the grease.  Yum!

Critic’s Note: Shari’s laid-back atmosphere extends through their service.  Please allow time to eat.  This is not a quick brunch, but definitely worth the wait.
